The mantra of most news organizations is that it is their duty to comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable.
When the news media do their jobs right, they provide readers, viewers and listeners with news that is illuminating, thought-provoking and gives them the information to direct the course of their lives. Sometimes it is even entertaining.
It is equally important, though, to recognize when the storytellers get it wrong, fail to provide a clear picture, commit sins of omission as well as commission.
The MGJR aims to provide that perspective and to fill that watchdog function. With the launch of our new quarterly e-zine MGJR will examine media, communication and information technology on the international stage, provide reporting and analysis on media and communications trends, issues and events from a global perspective in a timely manner.
MGJR will fill a much-needed niche, one that has often been overlooked by mainstream media. We will provide journalism and journalism education with a worldwide view. In each issue, we will look at the news through the lens of race, domestically and globally, provide commentary and examine news coverage for accuracy and diversity of perspective. We will also provide investigative stories on issues that impact communities of colors – issues like crime and policing, the economy, education, housing, labor, voting, environmental justice and more.
